Divine Intervention

Two Women Taking a Selfie in a Restaurant

Welcome back! Between France and now you haven’t missed too much. Kira and I went to her cousin’s wedding – that was a lot of fun! Kira started a new job where she gets to work from home. That was a new and interesting adjustment for us because we had a one bedroom apartment and now we were both going to be working from home. Not to mention, Kira has a job where she constantly needs to be on the phone while my job requires concentration and is typically done independently. Nonetheless, we adjusted and now we love working from home together! Other notables other than hitting the gym was we went to the Beachcomber which is a really nice beach bar in Laguna. We just spent the day hanging out at the bar and walking around Laguna and ended our day by getting ice cream at Fashion Island!

Back to the main content! To set the chronological scene it’s a random weekend in the beginning of October. Kira and I went to visit her grandma who lives about 2.5 hours away. We went on a Saturday to meet up with her grandma. Kira’s aunt, uncle, two cousins, great aunt, and brother were all there. We were having a get-together, obviously. Ironically enough, I was talking with her aunt about how Kira and I were talking about getting a puppy. We were in agreement that Kira and I didn’t need a puppy and it’s a lot of work. Somehow in between that time and what happened next, we ended up on the website for the animal shelter. Within (and I’m not exaggerating!) 3 minutes her aunt, Mimi, found a dog she thought was cute and said we should all go to the shelter “just to look”. We all piled into three cars to go to the shelter. We made it and went straight to the back where all the puppies were. I can’t lie – as soon as I saw all of their little faces, I was starting to melt. However, I knew Kira would get attached instantly from previous experience of when she found a baby bird on her walk and brought him home to try to nurse him back to health, so I tried to stay strong. I was erring on the side of caution. We had just moved into our apartment and we were planning on more travel. My admittedly weak apprehension was met with the full force of Kira and a tiny terrier puppy. Before I knew it, we were up at the front asking if the puppy was available. We found out that particular puppy was found abandoned on the side of the road with her brother. They were too young to be adopted that week and needed to get one round of shots before they could go to a new home. We were also informed that there was a raffle for them, because there was so much interest. After a short discussion I realized that we could go into the raffle and leave it up to divine intervention. Without a second thought, we submitted our name and were told that they would call on Wednesday if we got the puppy.

We went home to start our week and get back to our daily lives. I almost forgot about the excitement that happened over the weekend. Then Wednesday rolled around and Kira’s phone rang. All of the responsibility, expenses, and logistics of living in an apartment hit me like a ton of bricks. The lady on the phone explained they had chosen another family for our puppy, but they weren’t able to make it to the animal hospital by 3pm. Kira promised we would be there and hung up the phone. She just turned to look at me, and I looked at the time. We had to leave immediately and drive over 2 hours to her grandma’s house. We hopped in the car and stopped at Petco on the way to get puppy pads and puppy food.

The drive was nerve racking; we were excited and nervous mixed into one. We spent most of the drive googling “dog names,” “unique names for a girl,” and “what does this name mean” while looking at the picture of our puppy on the animal shelter’s website. Somehow we settled on the name Zuri. We kept circling back to it and eventually decided we would just have to explain to everyone what her name was. Spoiler alert – the uniqueness definitely fits her personality.

We made it to pick her up and I was still unsure, but when they brought us into the room to see if we would be a good fit, our new puppy ran over and sat on Kira’s lap and ran over to me to kiss my hand. I was hooked! She was just the cutest puppy. We took her to Kira’s grandma’s house along with her Mimi’s new puppy, Eddie, and gave them a bath. Zuri was instantly the best dog; I don’t want to hear anything from anyone about being bias. She did not want to be anywhere without Kira and me. She immediately came when her name was called, and she went potty outside. The clincher is when we drove her home, she laid in the car all the way. We drove 2 hours home and then waited 20 minutes to put down the potty pad. As soon as we put down the pad she ran over and peed. We couldn’t believe our 4 week year old puppy was fully potty trained. Basically, everyday since has been amazing. She didn’t get taller (just longer) and is the greatest sleeper in the world. She is one of the lights of my life and I will be constantly posting photo/videos of her, so yeah. Also Kira says she doesn’t look like my other baby dog, but I’ll let you decide.

Tune in next to see what happens in December!!
